Focus on the game

Today was the day, he had decided, to tell Eliza about the Prophecy and all that entails. So, as soon as he sat down at their usual breakfast table, he informed her he needed to talk with her.

“What’s wrong?” she asked apprehensively.

James shook his head. “Nothing. I just . . . finally got permission to tell you something.”

“Okay . . .” Eliza said slowly.

He turned back to his plate, wanting to finish his breakfast of French toast.

As soon as Eliza was through with her plate, he stood, taking each of their trays, and dumped them in the tray window. He laced his fingers in hers and the pair stepped out into the courtyard.

The morning sun was starting to turn the sky from steely gray to a pearlescent pink as James led her over to a secluded bench. The cool scent of winter lingered in the air as the sunshine barely provided any warmth on this early March day. When he was confident that no one could overhear their conversation, he cleared his throat.

Eliza huddled in on herself to ward off the chill as she moved her eyes to his.

“Okay,” James began. “A few weeks ago Mr. Blakeney told me the real reason that I was brought here.”

Questions lurked beneath the surface, but she kept her peace.

“He told me that it wasn’t just because of my bloodline, but something much more.” James paused and steadily held her curious gaze. “Have you ever heard of anything called the Elemental Prophecy?”

“Hmm . . .” she said as she searched her memory. “No, I don’t think so anyway.”

He nodded. He’d expected this. “Well it’s a prophecy that the Oracle of Delphi gave in the fourth century B.C. It speaks of a time when the elements would collide.”

At this, she raised her eyebrows.

“But it also says that a child would be born in the beginning of this millennium that would decide the fate of the known world.” He breathed deeply and huffed out a nervous breath in a whoosh of air. “I’m that child, apparently.”

Eliza opened her mouth as if to speak, but quickly closed it. She bit her lip, a far-away stare glossing over her eyes, then nodded slowly. “How does the Director know for sure?”

“Um . . . er,” James paused knowing how crazy the next part might sound. “My name is on it . . . in Ancient Greek.”

She blinked. James nodded.

“So . . . let me get this straight,” Eliza clarified, searching his face. “Director Blakeney finds this prophecy, translates it, and figures out that this child spoken of is you? And that you were actually named by someone over two thousand years ago?”

“Yup,” he confirmed. “Pretty much sums it up. Sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, but I was told to keep it a secret.”

Her voice was hollow when she replied. “And what do you do with that revelation?”

“Mr. Blakeney’s been training me how to use a sword and shield and all that. Basically, just preparing me for whatever might come.
